Health and Safety Job Description: We are excited to announce that we are now looking for an experienced Head of Health and Safety to join our Central Operations team. Reporting to our Director of Group Programme and Central Operations, our new Head of Health and Safety will be responsible for Health and Safety across the Reach publishing and manufacturing business to ensure corporate governance, legal compliance and best practice professional health and safety leadership.

This is a home working role, therefore can be based anywhere in the UK, with regular travel to our National sites required.

As our Head of Health and Safety, you will work closely with the Head of Central Services, Head of Security and HR leadership team to set the direction for effective health and safety management across multi-site offices, manufacturing and remote working environments, reviewing and developing all aspects of Health and Safety policy and activity, ensuring implementation across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor, evaluate and review existing, new and upcoming health and safety legislation and ensure that systems and procedures are in place to meet legal compliance
  • Work proactively with managers and other key staff to establish and maintain a programme of continuous improvement within their areas of responsibility
  • Work closely with the Head of Central Services and Head of Security to ensure compliance requirements are being controlled, documented and maintained in accordance with regulations and guidelines
  • Ensure that rigorous risk assessment and incident management systems are in place and followed across the organisation
  • Liaise with HR on health and wellbeing issues particularly where a risk assessment has identified a need
  • Oversee and undertake audits where appropriate and ensure action plans are established to address issues identified
  • Identify, provide and/or procure an effective health and safety-related training regime
  • Prepare and present Health and Safety reports to the executive for inclusion in public documentation
  • Management of insurance claims both current and historic
  • Developing a culture of trust, where people are safe to speak up, clear on their role in the team’s success and empowered to be their best at work
The Ideal Candidate

  • You will have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all aspects of health, safety and risk management
  • You will bring a comprehensive knowledge of current health and safety legislation, management and standards
  • Your experience will enable you to interpret and provide authoritative advice on health and safety and risk management issues
  • You will have recent proven experience of working in a health and safety role at a similar level and bringing about health and safety culture change within an organisation
  • You will have strong knowledge of workplace wellbeing initiatives and how they add value to an Organisation
  • You will have the ability to prioritise work to ensure tasks are completed within time constraints.
  • You will bring flexibility /versatility towards your work, combined with initiative and the drive for continuous improvement
  • You will be a strong communicator, both written and face-to-face, in order to effectively cascade consistent messages for maximum impact
  • Be competent in accident investigation and preparing reports for both the HSE and Insurers

We need you to have…

  • Chartered Membership of the Institute of Safety and Health
  • An understanding and experience of achieving 45001 accreditation
  • Be competent in accident investigation and preparing reports for both the HSE and Insurers
  • NEBOSH Fire Certificate
  • P405 Asbestos Qualification or Equivalent
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate
