Full Job Description
BAM Nuttall are appointed by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Transmission as Principal Contractor to ensure the construction of the Shetland HVDC Converter Station which will connect Shetland to the Great Britain transmission network. This presents the successful candidate an opportunity to join an expanding safety department, founded on drive and determination, to improve the health and safety of our colleagues. There will be also an opportunity to grow, and move, within our increasing portfolio of future works. The project specifically consists of an AC Substation at Kergord in Shetland; and an HVDC Switching Station at Noss Head, Caithness, in the north of Scotland. BAM Nuttall are delivering all major civil engineering and, mechanical and engineering, works; a Health and Safety Advisor is required to enhance the existing team and advise operational personnel in the design, implementation and review of safe systems.
As a Health and Safety Advisor, your key activities will include:
- Advise, guide and coach operational personnel designing, implementing and reviewing safe systems of work
- Ensure that organisational controls are state of the art
- Carry out benchmarked safety inspections and report findings
- Ensure that safety is promoted at all times
- Maintain clear records and reporting timeously to a high standard
- Assist site managers with supply chain partner / vendor evaluations
- Promote a positive health and safety ethos through all interactions
- Deliver training, inductions, communications to operational staff
- Identify ideas for improvement and potential solutions
- Provide operational support on incident investigation
- Being a proactive member of a high performing team
Your qualifications, skills and experience should include:
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Construction – Vocational Qualifications will be considered
- 3 years’ experience as a site safety officer in construction
- Good communicator thriving for professional development
- Graduate membership of IOSH
- Ability to take responsibility for a self-generated workload
- Ability to deliver training to all roles
- Ability to advise all roles on health and safety issues using benchmarks
- Ability to positively contribute in accident investigations
- Ability to document site inspection reports for all roles

The project operates a ten working day followed by four days off rotation to allow for every other weekend off; this is further enhanced by subsistence and travel allowance.
