National Highways have an ambitious plan to ensure that all those who work with us return home, safe and well every day.
As a Health and Safety Manager working with our Standards, Engineering & Safety Directorate you will ensure delivery of the plan through project and programme strategy, adding value through positive intervention, challenging behaviour, influencing decision making and encouraging innovation.
Location: Bedford / Hybrid with some travel to site
You will primarily work with the Smart Motorway Programme and Smart Motorway Alliance to support safe delivery of significant investment on the motorway network. However, as part of the Highways England Health and Safety team you may be involved in supporting other major projects and schemes.
You will use your knowledge, skills and experience to offer; support, advice and assurance on health and safety issues ensuring that as both employer and client we are fulfilling out duties and continuing to develop a positive health and safety culture.
The role will involve working from our Bedford office as well as travelling to site. You will need to have a full clean driving licence for this position during employment.
What you’ll be leading on
- Support implementation of business strategy and requirements in line with our health and safety plan.
- Support development and implementation of relevant health and safety plans and initiatives to engage colleagues and ensure a consistent approach across the programme.
- Undertake health and safety assurance activities in the pre-construction and construction phases of project delivery, including; design for safety reviews, site inspections, incident review.
- Monitor and review health and safety performance and provide feedback to project and programme colleagues in the business area that bring insight, to shape business strategy and decision-making.
- Support, advise and influence regional or programme colleagues on health and safety matters affecting safe delivery of projects.
- Engage colleagues as champions of health, safety and wellbeing.
To be successful
- Auditing / Quality Assurance experience (desirable).
- Experience of implementing health and safety strategy in multi-site organisations, preferably with a infrastructure asset owner or developer. (desirable).
- Working knowledge of construction industry health and safety legislation and its interpretation and application within infrastructure projects (essential).
- Experience of health and safety management within a client organisation covering large scale infrastructure projects and employer context (essential).
- Professional level membership of a recognised body (e.g. IOSH) with relevant Continuous Professional Development (essential).
- NEBOSH / NCRQ Diploma Level 6 (or equivalent) health and safety qualification (essential).
- Ability to communicate and influencing effectively at all organisational levels (including Senior Managers) and across all disciplines, both within Highways England and with external organisations (essential).
- Ability to understand and analyse complex information and present it simply and accurately (essential).
