Through its Dalton Nuclear Institute, The University of Manchester maintains the largest nuclear
research and higher learning capability across UK academia.
In West Cumbria, the heart of the UK nuclear industry, the Institute operates the Dalton Cumbrian Facility (DCF), a state-of-the-art research base for radiation science, located on Westlakes Science Park. DCF is a partner in a number of national research programmes and houses large scale irradiation systems and a wide range of specialist material preparation, modification and characterisation
instrumentation allowing academia and industry the opportunity to carry out high- end research in radiation science and nuclear engineering decommissioning.
We are seeking to employ a Safety & Emerging Capabilities Officer to act as our safety coordinator and to embed new capabilities within DCF. The role holder will liaise closely with the wider safety advisors within the Facility of Science and Engineering and central Safety Services. The safety of our people is vital and the role holder will provide support and guidance to students, staff and visitors using DCF.
The research facility at DCF is ever evolving and we welcome and support new uses of our facilities – the role holder will support and help develop these new capabilities and use cases. They will have a key role in the safe implementation and first use of any new capability or technique.
This is an exciting time to become involved in DCF as, in addition to our important work around nuclear energy and zero emissions, we are developing emerging capabilities in the areas of medical isotopes, bio and space. The post-holder will be encouraged to develop new capabilities within DCF’s existing strategy and will help contribute to the formation of our future plans.
