Join us at the world-leading CRUK Cambridge Institute. We’re a unique department of the University of Cambridge, core funded by Cancer Research UK’s charitable activities, and we’re eagerly searching for our new Health & Safety Manager.
The role of Health and Safety Manager is to provide advice and guidance on matters of health and safety. Collaborating with the research scientists and support staff to find practical solutions to complex health and safety issues, being responsive to the needs of the research, and enabling a proportionate response to the management of risk.
The role also entails facilitating strategic and operational planning and prioritisation for health and safety at the CI. Developing and maintaining the local Institute health and safety policies, arrangements and procedures. Keeping abreast of changes in legislation, and using this information to update policies, procedures and safety general safety arrangements to ensure legal compliance.
The role-holder will also engage with Institute personnel at all levels in order to foster a positive health and safety culture within the Institute.
They are responsible for managing a small Health and Safety team. They act as lead Radiation Protection Supervisor facilitating compliance with the regulations regarding the use and transport of radioactive material. They also act as the Biological Safety Officer facilitating compliance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (amended) and Genetically Modified (Contained Use) Regulations 2014.
They are responsible for convening the CI Health and Safety Committee (HSC) and the Biological Safety Committee (BSC). They also liaise with the enforcing authorities directly or via the University Safety Office. Other duties include the development and delivery of local health and safety training at the CI. Organising and conducting health and safety inspections, and following up the outcome of the inspections. Investigating accidents and incidents, and following up accident and incident investigations. Liaising with Occupational Health and Human Resources regarding work-related ill health, and liaising with Security regarding fire safety.
Our institute links the laboratory to the clinic, carrying out cancer research of direct relevance to patients.
