The Scottish SPCA, Scotland’s animal welfare charity is seeking to appoint an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental practitioner to support the Society’s ongoing development of our ambitious people strategy with a strong focus on employee engagement, health and wellbeing.
Reporting directly to the Director of People & Culture, the successful candidate will provide specialist support across the Society and will have experience in effectively contributing to, managing and developing a health, safety, wellbeing and environmental agenda in a multi-site environment.
This is a key role ensuring compliance with all aspects of health, safety, environmental legislation and best practice throughout the Society. The postholder will be required to actively promote a positive safety culture along with providing advice and coaching within the Society working closely with Senior Leadership, managers, staff and our Board of Trustees.
Key responsibilities and projects include the following:
Continue the development of the Society’s health and safety infrastructure in line with the Health and Safety Executive’s “Leading Health and Safety at Work” guidance (INDG417 guidance);
Guide and advise senior management on adopting practical, effective measures to ensure all our employees thrive and our workplaces have the highest safety protocols and risk assessments are embedded in all working practices.
Assist all levels of management to implement and comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and relevant safety legislation, making recommendations and interpret policy decisions to ensure legislative compliance;
Be the first point of contact with all Health, Safety and Environmental (SHE) enquiries and investigate concerns raised by employees where appropriate and take action accordingly;
Prepare, review, update, provide advice and guidance on SHE legislation, policies, procedures and best practice across all of the Society’s operational areas;
To actively promote a positive safety and environmental focused culture throughout the Society;
To act as chair of the Society’s Health & Safety subcommittee, and to provide expert guidance and leadership to committee members on relevant Health & Safety matters
To investigate accidents and dangerous occurrences, including giving advice on preventative measures to minimise /eliminate hazards/risks from that incident
To ensure any external contractors comply with the Society’s control of contractors policy and meet the required standards of safety and competency
The position is full-time, 35 hours, Monday to Friday. The role is based at its Headquarters in Dunfermline with a mix of homeworking. A full driving licence is essential as travel to our various centres will be required on a regular basis.
