About the opportunity
The HSE in Design Professional plays a proactive, visible and diligent role during all aspects of Engineering & Design work to ensure that the teams are meeting the intent of HSE in Design Best Practice, local work instructions, and legislative requirements. The HSE in Design Professional is the safety conscious of the design and sets the tone and culture for design HSE on the project. The HSE in Design Professional is expected to challenge the norm and encourage innovation across the design process to make our designs even safer through the lifecycle of the project seeking to eliminate and mitigate hazards which arise during construction, use, operation and maintenance, future renovation and eventual demolition of the facility, plant or infrastructure.
Responsibilities
The role relies on HSE in Design Professional having appropriate experience and knowledge of engineering design, construction and health and safety to be able to undertake the following tasks:
- Advise team on HSE in Design requirements and local H&S legislation with respect to design
- Review Design Input Statements (as appropriate) to gather information on design scope, Client Requirements (with respect to design H&S), key assumptions and limitations, standards, codes and regulations to which designs are being carried out and key interfaces.
- Proactively support and facilitate competency assessment of internal teams and Contractors / Subcontractors
- Ensuring coordination between multi-disciplinary design teams
- Coordinate with external designers including temporary works designers
- Ensure a Risk Register is created and maintained where all of the hazards identified by the designers and the HSE Design Professional will be recorded, and the design decisions and mitigation measures identified for each hazard will be recorded;
- Input/organisation of HSE in design reviews. Prepare HSE Workshop Reports and Design Gateway Statements;
- Ensuring coordination between key stakeholders such as constructor, operator, maintainer, client etc and in particular ensure communicate key risk information to stakeholders
- Undertake site visits where required to understand specific site issues;
- Undertake additional tasks as required for local H&S legislation
- Share the successes and lessons learned within the HSE in Design community.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Essential Qualifications / Competencies
Chartered Engineer (civil, mechanical, electrical, structural, building, building services)
- CMIOSH, ICE H&S Register, RMaPS or similar
- Relevant experience in one of more of the following;
- Utilities
- Mechanical and Electrical
- Heavy civil engineering / earthworks
- Highways and related infrastructure
- Power Networks
- Proven capability to influence designer and contractors and client stakeholders
- Confidence and credibility in own expertise
- High level of written and verbal communication skills
- Highly developed inter-personal skills – team player
Desirable
- Major Construction / Engineering project experience in the UK
- Experience in working with Behavioural Safety Initiatives
