What is the best lone worker app according to our study?

Based on a comparison of the total number of downloads and average Trustpilot rating Peoplesafe emerges as the best provider. Widely recognised as an industry leader, they also won first place in Tomorrow’s health and safety award and have also been noted as the largest provider of lone worker safety technology according to the Berg report.

Lone Worker Apps: Provider Guide

Peoplesafe

Peoplesafe is an enterprise-focused lone worker safety provider offering app-based safety tools supported by its own in-house Alarm Receiving Centre. Its lone worker app includes welfare checks, fall detection, panic alarms and location updates, as well as more advanced features for larger organisations.

One key feature is Travelsafe, which monitors a worker’s journey and raises an alert if they do not arrive at their destination as expected. The app also works with Apple Watch, allowing users to check in, raise alerts and access help from their wrist.

Peoplesafe also integrates with safety technologies such as body worn cameras and dashcams. For administrators, the Nexus customer portal supports licence management, reporting and Single Sign-On, making the platform easier to manage across larger teams.

Another notable feature is Peoplesafe’s ability to integrate with workforce management technology via an API. For example, Peoplesafe client Openreach uses this integration to connect actions from its workforce management app, such as checking in and out of shifts, with corresponding actions in the Peoplesafe app. This helps provide background safety for workers without requiring them to use two separate apps.

Total Mobile

Total Mobile, previously Lone Worker Solutions, offers a lone worker safety app supported by a dedicated 24/7 Alarm Receiving Centre. It includes core features such as timed activities, welfare checks and worker down alerts.

Its Group Alert feature allows managers to send updates or urgent messages to selected groups or individuals. Total Mobile also offers Safe Beacon, a geofencing tool that can trigger alerts when workers enter or leave predefined areas.

The management portal allows organisations to configure escalation processes based on individual risk assessments. It also gives managers visibility over device usage, alert activity and worker locations.

Ok Alone

Ok Alone is a straightforward lone worker safety app aimed at organisations that need essential monitoring without unnecessary complexity. It includes real-time location tracking, emergency alerts and man down detection.

The app is designed to be simple to set up and easy for workers to use. One of its more distinctive features is voice command support, allowing workers to use Siri, Alexa or Google Home to trigger certain safety actions.

In the UK, Ok Alone does not appear to offer a dedicated Alarm Receiving Centre. Instead, alerts are managed through named monitors or an internal security operations centre, which may suit organisations with existing response processes.

StaySafe

StaySafe is part of EcoOnline and provides a flexible lone worker app for employees in higher-risk or isolated roles. It includes manual check-ins, fall detection and GPS location tracking.

Their driving mode feature suppresses notifications and reminders while a worker is on the road. StaySafe also includes Privacy Mode, where location data can remain hidden unless an alarm is triggered.

The app provides low battery alerts to help reduce false alarms and prevent workers becoming uncontactable. However, its Alarm Receiving Centre is outsourced and handles other alarm types as well as lone worker incidents.

Safepoint

Safepoint provides a simpler lone worker safety app with features such as panic alerts, time-out alarms, fall detection and GPS tracking. It is designed for organisations that need practical safety monitoring without a complex enterprise setup.

One of its strengths is in-app team management. Managers can use the app to monitor worker locations, task status and safety alerts from their phones.

Safepoint also offers an option without Alarm Receiving Centre support, which can reduce costs for organisations that manage alerts internally. However, fall detection requires wearable devices and live tracking may affect phone battery life.

SoloProtect

SoloProtect provides a lone worker app designed to support communication, alerting and emergency response. It includes core safety features and is backed by an in-house Alarm Receiving Centre.

The app includes mass notification functionality, allowing organisations to send real-time alerts to workers. These can be targeted to specific groups or individuals during incidents or urgent situations.

SoloProtect Insights is an online platform for onboarding, training, reporting and safety management and comes as part of the software. Some users may find the app interface less intuitive, and its third-party integration options appear more limited than some competitors.

Tips for selecting the right lone worker app

Pick the best provider for your industry

Selection of the right lone worker app means you should consider how well each provider fits the day-to-day risks of your industry. Peoplesafe is a strong option for a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, utilities, housing, facilities management and public services, as its broad feature set, dedicated Alarm Receiving Centre and integration options make it suitable for varied and higher-risk working environments.

StaySafe could be useful for industries where employees spend significant time on the road, with the driving mode app helping to reduce distractions while workers are driving. Other providers may be better for simpler use cases, but limitations like the absence of UK-based Alarm Receiving Centres, fewer integrations, limited wearable support or less advanced monitoring features could make them harder to apply in industries where risks are more complex.

Choose value with the lone worker app, not just cost

When comparing the cost of lone worker apps, businesses should look beyond the monthly licence fee and consider the longer-term return on investment. A lower-cost app may appear better value at first, but could become less effective if it lacks key features, requires more internal monitoring or creates extra admin for managers. Higher-cost providers may offer stronger value over time if they reduce incident response times, improve staff confidence, support compliance and make safety processes easier to manage. The right choice should balance upfront cost with the wider impact on risk reduction, employee protection, operational efficiency and long-term duty of care.
