EV Charging Station Safety Concerns: Risks, Controls and 2026 Standards

The main EV charging station safety concerns are electrical faults and shock, overheating and battery fires, weather exposure, cable trip hazards, vandalism and, increasingly, cyber security. None of these should put anyone off installing chargers, but each needs to be understood and controlled. This guide explains the risks, the practical controls, and the UK standards that apply in 2026.

The widespread use of electric vehicles (EVs) comes with the increasing demand for EV charging stations that are efficient and reliable for users and owners alike. When not appropriately handled, these stations can hold high-voltage electricity that can pose risks, like electrical fires or electrocutions. Extreme weather conditions and the potential for vandalism are also safety risks for EV charging stations.

The EV charging industry has significantly improved in ensuring its stations’ safety. Nowadays, charging stations feature emergency shut-off switches, ground fault protection, and safety labeling as the standard. With the continued growth, there is a continued need for innovation and improved safety in EV charging stations.

 

Why EV charging safety matters

EV chargers are high-voltage appliances built to move large amounts of energy quickly, so, like any powerful electrical equipment, they carry real risks if they are poorly installed or maintained. The bigger concern for many organisations is the vehicle battery itself. The lithium-ion batteries in EVs are generally safe, but physical damage, extreme temperatures, charging faults or age can, in rare cases, trigger thermal runaway: a self-sustaining overheating reaction that can release toxic, flammable gases and start a fire that spreads quickly through a modern car’s plastics. The potential consequences, harm to people, property damage, business interruption and higher insurance premiums, are why robust controls are essential rather than optional.

 

The main EV charging station safety concerns

Users and operators should consider these stations’ potential risks and hazards. The amount of high-voltage electricity poses numerous electrical dangers in and of itself. Improper use of these stations can lead to shocks, burns, and electrocutions. However, this risk is most common for installers. Overheating and fire hazards are other common concerns associated with EV stations. Improper installation, faulty equipment, or charging a vehicle with a damaged battery can all increase the chances of overheating, leading to a fire.

These stations are often outdoors, which poses weather risks. High winds, heavy rain, lightning, and flooding can all cause damage to stations and pose risks to those nearby. Due to their location, these stations are also prone to vandalism. This vandalism can include physical harm, such as tampering with the electrical components or intentionally short-circuiting the charger.

While existing safety measures exist to protect users and operators, designers must continuously improve to ensure the safety of those enjoying EV charging stations.

In summary, the concerns that come up most often are:

  • Electrical risks: shock, burns and arc faults, particularly during installation or if protection is inadequate.
  • Fire and overheating: faults, damaged batteries or poor installation leading to thermal runaway.
  • Weather exposure: rain, flooding, lightning and high winds damaging outdoor units.

EV charging fire safety

Fire is the concern that worries facilities and safety managers most, so it deserves its own focus. Battery fires are rare but intense, hard to extinguish and can reignite, which is why prevention and containment matter more than relying on putting a fire out.

Location is the first line of defence. Where space allows, position chargers a sensible distance from buildings and combustible materials, leave room between charging bays so a fire cannot spread easily from one vehicle to the next, and make sure fire and rescue services can reach the area. Where tight or residential sites make ideal spacing impossible, a site-specific risk assessment by a competent person should set the controls instead.

Keep the area around each charger clear of waste, vegetation and other flammable materials, and install impact protection barriers so vehicles cannot strike the equipment. Chargers should shut down automatically on a fault or when a fire alarm is triggered, and a clearly marked manual isolation point should let staff cut the supply quickly in an emergency.

Industry fire-safety guidance such as the RISC Authority’s RC59 sets out recommendations for charging EVs safely, and is a useful reference when planning a site.

 

Charging in enclosed spaces

Charging in underground or multi-storey car parks adds risk, because fires are harder to detect, ventilate and fight, and smoke is contained. If you are installing chargers in enclosed spaces, commission a detailed risk assessment, consider additional fire detection and suppression such as sprinklers, and ensure there is enough compartmentation to contain a fire. Early detection is critical in these locations.

 

EV charging safety requirements and standards (2026)

In the UK, EV charging safety is underpinned by a clear set of standards and regulations. As of 2026, the key references are:

  • BS 7671:2018, the IET Wiring Regulations, with Amendment 4:2026 (published April 2026). Section 722 covers EV charging installations, and Amendment 4 introduced provisions for Residual Direct Current (RDC) protective devices in EV charging, reflecting how the technology has matured.
  • The IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation, now in its 5th edition and aligned with BS 7671:2018+A2:2022, the definitive installation guidance.
  • BS EN 61851-1:2019, the standard for EV conductive charging systems.
  • The Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, which require most private chargepoints rated up to 50 kW to have smart functionality.
  • Part S of the Building Regulations (England), which mandates EV charging provision for many new and renovated buildings, with chargepoints installed to BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice.

The practical takeaway is that installation is not a DIY job. Use a certified contractor (for example one accredited by NICEIC, NAPIT, ECA, SELECT or SAFed), follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the IET Code of Practice, and keep the documentation. Residual Current Devices (RCDs) must be fitted so that power is cut automatically in a fault, and the installation should be periodically inspected and tested.

 

Practical risk controls: what to put in place

Keeping chargers safe comes down to good design, proper installation, ongoing maintenance and trained staff. In practice that means:

  • Professional, certified installation following the IET Code of Practice and BS 7671.
  • RCDs and appropriate fault protection, including the RDC provisions now in BS 7671.
  • Automatic shutdown on a fault or fire alarm, plus an accessible manual isolation point.
  • A clear zone around each charger kept free of combustible materials.
  • Cable holders to keep leads tidy and off walkways, reducing trip hazards.
  • A maintenance schedule of professional periodic checks, supported by daily visual checks and regular inspections for cracks or damage to the unit and its base.
  • An emergency plan covering charger or vehicle fires, with staff trained to isolate and shut down units safely.
  • Avoiding unattended charging where practical, so a problem can be spotted early.

 

Home EV charging safety

Home charging brings its own questions. Two come up repeatedly:

Is it safe to charge an EV from a 3-pin plug? A standard 3-pin (“granny”) charger should only ever be an occasional backup, not a daily solution. They draw a high current for long periods, which a normal domestic socket and its wiring are not designed to sustain, so they should be plugged directly into a known-good socket on its own, never via an extension lead or multi-way adaptor, and the socket should ideally be checked by an electrician. For regular charging, a dedicated, professionally installed home chargepoint (a Mode 3 unit) is far safer.

Is it safe to charge in the rain? Yes. Approved chargepoints and connectors are designed and IP-rated to be weatherproof and to be used outdoors in wet conditions, with multiple layers of electrical protection. The sensible precautions are simply to use undamaged equipment, keep connectors clean and dry where you can, and never use a charger or cable with visible damage.

 

EV charging safety checklist

A quick checklist to sense-check a site, adapt it to your own circumstances and risk assessment:

  • Chargers installed and inspected by a certified contractor, to BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice.
  • RCDs and fault protection fitted and tested.
  • Automatic shutdown and an accessible manual isolation point in place.
  • Vehicle and charger spacing set with fire spread in mind.
  • Charging area clear of combustibles, with impact protection barriers.
  • Cable holders provided to remove trip hazards.
  • Regular maintenance and inspection scheduled and recorded.
  • Fire service access ensured and an emergency plan in place, with staff trained.
  • Smart charger software kept up to date for cyber security.
  • Charging avoided when completely unattended where possible.

Looking Ahead: The Future for Charging Electric Vehicles

As electric vehicle use and widespread charging stations are more commonly found, safety concerns must be addressed promptly and accordingly. While EV charging stations come with potential risks and hazards, there are many safety measures that installers have already set in place that have proven effective in ensuring the safety of users and operators.
